Important Race Day Info For All Athletes

Timing Bibs

This year, we will be using disposable timing chips. The timing chip will be attached to the back of each runner’s bib and does not need to be returned at the end of the race. It is important that you do not fold, wrinkle, or otherwise alter your race bib. It is also important that you wear your bib on the front of your shirt. Failure to probably wear your bib and timing chip will result in you not receiving an official time.

Your time will start as you cross the start line and stop as you cross the finish line. Do not trade bibs with another athlete.

Buses (Marathon & Half-Marathon Only)

Half-marathon runners will meet their buses at the Provo Towne Centre Mall located at 1200 Towne Centre Boulevard, Provo, UT 84601. The bus pick-up will be on the west side of the mall, behind the Wells Fargo bank. ONLY HALF-MARATHONERS will be allowed on these buses; this bus does NOT go to the full marathon starting line. The first bus leaves at 3:30 AM, and the last bus leaves at 4:30 AM sharp. You may park anywhere within the mall parking lot that is not reserved or blocked off. After you complete your half-marathon, we will have buses available to take you back to the Provo Towne Centre Mall and your cars.

Full marathon runners will meet their buses one block north of the Provo Marriott at the corner of 100 West & 200 North, Provo. ONLY FULL-MARATHONERS will be allowed on these buses; this bus does NOT go to the half-marathon starting line. The first bus leaves at 3:30 AM, and the last bus leaves at 4:15 AM sharp. When parking, please ensure that you are not parking in a restricted or prohibited area. Parking and towing fees, as well as traffic tickets are the responsibility of the vehicle’s driver.

Full marathon runners staying at the Zermatt Resort (Midway, UT) will meet their bus in front of the resort. This bus will leave at 4:15 AM sharp for the full marathon starting line. There will be no transportation to the half-marathon from this location. After the race, athletes staying at the Zermatt will have access to marked Zermatt shuttles which will return them to the resort.

Please plan on taking an earlier bus. Our race will start at 6:00 AM sharp, and not everyone will be able to ride the last bus.

REMEMBER, only half-marathon bibs will be allowed on the half-marathon buses (Provo Towne Centre Mall); only marathoner bibs on the marathon buses (Provo Marriott).

Starting Area

Runners of the half marathon will need to take caution at the starting area as the race begins right on US 189. The right lane will be shut down for both the half and full marathons with police/signs/barrel cones. The left lane will still be open, so please use caution, and it is absolutely mandatory to stay in the right lane. Runners found crossing over to the left side of the barrel cones will be disqualified and pulled from the course.

There is ABSOLUTELY no parking at the starting lines for either the full or half-marathon. Any cars found parked at either starting line will be towed by local law enforcement.

There will be water and POWERADE to drink, and fires to stay warm, at the full and half- marathon starting areas.

Clothing Drop-Off

Both the half-marathon and the marathon starting lines will have gear bag drops. Your expo goodie bag doubles as a gear drop bag; please bring it with you to the starting line if you intend to drop-off a bag. Each bib will have a bag tag that you can tear off and zip tie to your marathon bag. A volunteer will collect your bag, and we will have a truck take your belongings back to the starting line. We will have an area at the finish where you can retrieve your bag based upon your bib number. Please ensure that your tear off bib tag is attached to your gear bag. This will enable us to return your bag to you quickly and efficiently.

There will no longer be a clothing drop at mile 5. Any items left along the route will be considered a donation to charity. The only location we can retrieve items and have them for you in time at the finish is our gear bag drops at the starting lines.

Items left along the route at any spot other than marathon mile 5 will be considered a donation to a local charity and will not be returned.

While we take the utmost care with all items left at the gear drop areas, we DO NOT recommend putting valuable or expensive items like cameras, car or house keys, cell phones, money, watches/jewelry, expensive clothing, or otherwise in the gear drop bags.

Marathon Pacers

The Utah Race Pacers will be pacing for both full and half- marathon distances. If you are interested in following a pacer, you can find the correct pacer at the starting line. They will be wearing fluorescent yellow shirts with red signs and carrying signs with the time in which they will finish the race (hours and minutes). There is no need to sign-up, just find the correct pacer and introduce yourself.

Full marathon pacers will be available for the following times: 3:10, 3:20, 3:30, 3:40, 3:50, 4:00, and 4:30.

Half-marathon pacers will be available for the following times: 1:35, 1:40, 1:45, 1:50, 1:55, 2:00, 2:05, and 2:20.

Port-A-Potties

Portable bathrooms will be located at the start, finish, and every two miles along the full and half-marathon course (beginning at mile 3 for the marathon).

Aid Stations

The aid stations will be located every 2 miles throughout the marathon and half-marathon course (for the marathon they begin at mile 3.) Each aid station will be equipped with water and POWERADE.

GU brand gel will be at miles: 7, 13 & 19 for the full marathon. GU brand gel will be located at mile 6 for the half marathon.

Marathon miles 9, 15, 21 & 24 will be equipped with bananas and oranges. For the half- marathon it will be at miles 2, 8 & 11.

Food or gel will be located on the first table. POWERADE will be on the second table (first table if no food or gel), and water will be on the final table of each aid station.

The 10K course will have share aid stations from the last five miles of the marathon route.

Miles/Turns/Clocks

Each mile will be accurately marked as certified by the USATF. There will be a clock at the start and finish (The full marathon will also have a clock at mile 13.1).

All of the turns will be clearly marked by a sign and staffed by a uniformed volunteer or law enforcement. Please obey their instructions; they are there for your protection and safety.

Course Time Limit

The marathon & half marathon course will be closed at 12:30 PM. All marathon runners must maintain a pace of 13:44/mile that enables them to cross the finish line no later than 12:30 PM. Runners falling behind this time will be required to move to the side of the road or sidewalk and obey standard traffic laws such as stopping at stoplights and intersections. Aid stations will not be available after 12:15 PM.

Full And Half-Marathon Cheering Locations

There are many good locations to cheer along University Avenue in Provo. We discourage people from standing anywhere in the Canyon as you will likely put yourself and or others in danger. The canyon is still open to traffic, but the two Provo bound lanes will be condensed to one for our race, so please do not put you, the athletes, or drivers in the canyon at risk.

Results

The timing company will have a results kiosk available to runners in the finishing area so that runners can check their final time.

Results will also be posted to our website as quickly as possible. Due to the large number of runners in their year’s event, as well as our dedication to accuracy, results may take a day or so to post. Please keep checking back to the website. Individual results will not be emailed.

If you qualify for the Boston Marathon on our course this year make sure that you receive a Boston Qualifier t-shirt while at the event. We will not be mailing these shirts this year, so remember to grab your shirt if you earn it!

Marathon Awards Ceremony

The marathon awards ceremonies for all three race distances will be held on the Utah County Courthouse by the flag poles, and adjacent to the finish line. Awards will not be mailed, so please be in attendance if you expect to win an award.

Overall and Masters awards will be based on gun time per USATF rules. Age group awards will be based on chip times:

  • Half-marathon – 9:30 AM
  • 10K – 10:15 AM
  • Full marathon – 11:00 AM

Massage Therapists

Several massage therapists will be available on the Tabernacle Park lawn offering post-race massages to runners at no charge. These massage professionals are offering their services for free, so please make sure and thank them profusely! Their services are limited to runners only.

10K Start/Finish

The 10K begins at the Ancestry.com building by the Riverwoods Shopping Center in Provo located at 360 W. 4800 N. Provo. The race follows the enters the marathon route a little past the first mile, and follows the marathon route for the last five miles to the same finish with the marathon. There will be no bussing to the starting line before the race, however, shuttle buses will be available in the finish area to take you back to your car at the starting area when you complete the race.

Kids 1K Fun Run

The 1K begins on Center Street (Provo) near the 100 E intersection, just east of the finish line. The race ends at the intersection of University Avenue and Center Street. The race begins at Noon. One adult may accompany each child for free. Busing is not required for this distance.

MP3/iPod/Earphones

While the Utah Valley Marathon does not prohibit music players or earphones, we encourage you to keep the music low enough, or use only one ear bud, so that you can hear instructions from course marshals, volunteers, and uniformed law enforcement, as well as hear other runners that may be passing you from behind.

Music loud enough to be heard by your fellow runners can be both distracting and irritating. Please use courtesy and common sense when setting your music volume.

Volunteers

Our race doesn’t exist without our volunteers. If you have friends or family that aren’t running, but want to be part of the experience, encourage them to volunteer. We welcome both individuals and groups such as church, scout, work, school, or neighborhood groups. If you know someone that may be interested, they can volunteer from the button on the bottom of our homepage or by registering directly by clicking here.

Finally, if you’re participating in our race, you’ve benefited from the generosity of a volunteer. While we take every opportunity to thank them ourselves, please help us out and tell the volunteers what a great job they’re doing. We firmly believe we have the best volunteers in the world and they deserve to hear it often!
